'Blast caused by high explosive, possibly car bomb'

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani said on Thursday the blast damaging Australian Embassy and nearby high rise buildings in Kuningan, South Jakarta was mostly caused by a suicide car bomb using high explosive.

"We found a chunk of human torso inside the Plaza 89 front yard across the street from the Embassy," Firman said.

"The bomb was a high explosive one although we do not know yet what substances were used. Glasses in a radius of 500 meters from the embassy were shattered," he added.

Firman also said at least 10 cars, 2 motorcycles and 2 Metromini minibuses were destroyed by the explosion.

The explosion created a crater of 30 meters by 30 meters which is larger than the crater created by JW Marriott Hotel bombing in August 2002 of 20 meters by 20 meters.

Police found at least four bodies inside cars and onmotorcycles near the explosion center.

At least nine people were reportedly dead and more than 90 people were injured. (dmr/nvn)

At least eight people dead as bomb rocks Aussie embassy in Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): At least eight people were reportedly dead following a powerful blast outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on Jl. HR Rasuna Said in South Jakarta.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the Australian Embassy building and other high rise buildings nearby.

Elshinta radio reported that three bodies were evacuated to nearby MMC Hospital while another five were sent to Medistra Hospital on Jl. Gatot Subroto.

More than 90 injured people were also admitted to the MMC Hospita.

The bomb went off at about 10:30 a.m. in the busy Kuningan business and financial district along Jl. HR Rasuna Said.

There was no detailed information on the explosive with reports saying it went off from either a car or a motorcycle.

Traffic leading to the district was heavily congested as police and traffic wardens seal off the area from motorists.

In recent weeks several Western embassies, including those of the United States and Australia, have warned their citizens about possible attacks by militants.

Last year, 12 people died in a suicide attack on the JW Marriott hotel in the same district. In 2002, 202 people, mostly Westerners travelgoers, died in an attack on two nightclubs on the tourist island of Bali. (***)

Explosion outside Australian Embassy in Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): A powerful explosion caused extensive damage to the Australian Embassy building and other high rise buildings nearby in the busy Kuningan district area in South Jakarta.

Details of casualties were still sketchy. Anteve reported that three bodies had been taken to the MMC Hospital near the site of the location.

Witnesses said two bodies were lying on the street, covered with plastics, as police and rescue workers cleared the area.

No embassy workers were injured in the blast, said Lyndall Sachs, a spokeswoman for the Australian foreign ministry in Canberra. She said that windows of the building were shattered and that power was down.

The mission was evacuated in line with standard procedures, Sachs said as reported by Associated Press.

But Anteve reported that one of the victims was a security guard of the Embassy.

Huge blast in South Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): A huge blast rocked the busy Kuningan district area in South Jakarta on Thursday morning, with earlier reports suggesting that the explosion took place closed to the Australian Embassy.

Antara reported that the explosion occured outside the embassy building.
Radio and TV reports said that the blast damaged the fence of the Australian Embassy and cars parked inside.A number of office buildings in the area also reported of broken windows.

The explosion was heard from as far as two kilometers. A resident in Tebet, about two kilometers away, said she felt the ground shook.

The Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Firman Gani left a hearing with the House of Representatives for the blast site.

Police have already cordoned off the area.
